About the Artist

Person on beach at night looking up at light

Dawn Gellner

My paintings explore space, ambiguity, and the emotional atmosphere that exists between calm and unease, light and dark, memory and forgetting. I am drawn to transitional moments — dusk, dawn, mist, distant weather — and to landscapes that feel both familiar and unreachable.

Through restrained palettes, softened horizons, blurred edges, and subtle shifts in light, I create quiet, expansive environments that invite stillness, breath, and attentive looking. Space is central to my work. It creates room to breathe, to feel, to notice, and to exist without urgency. Within this openness, emotion and memory can surface gradually rather than all at once.

At the same time, I am interested in the tension that can reside beneath stillness: a sense of nostalgia, uncertainty, or quiet anticipation — something emerging or dissolving just beyond perception. Rather than depicting a specific place, my paintings aim to evoke something sensed rather than seen — a subtle presence carried within space itself.
